Did you know King Alfred the Great was born in Wantage in 849AD?

To celebrate this fact we have created an Anglo Saxon home within our museum which helps tell the story of Alfred and why he was so great.

The gallery includes a facsimile copy of ‘The Life of King Alfred’, the manuscript written by Alfred’s biographer Asser, that tells us that Alfred was born in Wantage.

Below you can see photos of the gallery, watch the special film created in conjunction with local students that tells the story of the manuscript, watch a short video of Latin language in the time of King Alfred and read the information panels from the gallery.
