Updated 24th September 2020

The safety of our visitors, volunteers and staff is our top priority at VDM and we have introduced a number of new procedures to ensure the museum and cafe are as safe as possible. Our main aim is ensure a visit to the museum is fun but also safe.

What to expect when you visit

It is now a legal requirement for ALL* visitors, staff and volunteers to wear a face covering whilst in the museum. Only removing the face covering when seated in the café to consume food and drink.  *Except children under 11 and exempt adults.

We have increased cleaning throughout the museum and café. Staff and volunteers will be cleaning high touch areas in the reception and gift shop area, the toilets, tables and chairs in the café and all touchable surfaces in the main galleries.

When you enter the museum you will notice signs all around the museum to help guide you through the museum safely, including floor stickers marking a 2 meter distance and there are a number of hand sanitising stations throughout.

We ask that when you enter you use the hand sanitiser that is located on the wall in front of the entrance, then enter to the right and make your way round to the reception desk, where our reception team will greet you and explain the new guidelines. They will also ask you for a name and contact telephone number or email address, this is for the government requirement Track and Trace system. Your details will be kept for the recommended 3 weeks, stored securely and then destroyed in line with GDPR. In addition you can download the NHS Covid-19 App (the app can be downloaded from the app store or google play) and scan the QR code that will be clearly displayed at reception and café entrance.

If you are here to visit the museum the reception staff will guide you through to the main galleries, where each area of has a maximum number of people allowed which will be clearly marked on signs around the galleries. We are now legally required to ensure visitors comply with the Rule of Six, this unfortunately means we can not allow groups of more than 6 people to enter the museum.

Unfortunately we are not able to offer the usual hands on experience throughout the museum and we kindly ask that you refrain from touching anything that is roped off, but we are very pleased to still have all our interactive buttons available for visitors to use, sanitising wipes and hand sanitising gel will be available at each area. Please use these as needed.

This does mean that we are unable to have our very popular children’s gallery trails sheets available. If you would like your children to take part in the current gallery trails you can download our current trail sheets (Souvenir Trail and Rocking Around the World Trail) to print at home and bring along with your own pencil to complete. Sadly we will not be giving out stickers.

Due to space restrictions the mezzanine area in the main galleries and the Research Library will remain closed to the public for the foreseeable future.

Children will as always need to be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Visiting the Café

The Café staff will all be wearing face coverings and tables and chairs will be sanitised between customers.

Once you have been through reception you will be asked to wait in the café area to be seated by a member of the café team. This is to ensure that tables and chairs are sanitised between customers.

It is now strictly table service only with a reduced menu, which you will find on each table. Please stay seated and a member of the café team will take your order at the table.

It is a legally requirement to wear a face covering when entering or leaving the café, removing them only to consume food and drink.

Please pay by contactless where possible.

The reduced cafe menu

These measures will be in place for the foreseeable future. Please bear with us as we navigate this unusual time.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.
